Un estudio publicado en la revista Science afirma que el origen del gato doméstico podría llegar hasta las antiguas civilizaciones del Medio Oriente, lugar al cual se cree que es de surgieron las primeras ciudades. En el estudio se sugiere que los ancestros de los gatos domesticados se apartaron de los gatos salvajes hace más de 100 mil años, cifra mucho mayor de lo que se creía.
Por lo menos 5 gatos hembras son las que dieron el origen a todas las familias de gatos que se conocen. Las pruebas de ADN realizadas indicaron que aparte de las cruzas accidentales, los felinos europeos salvajes no son parte del árbol genealógico del gato doméstico, además de que no se encontró material genético de los gatos salvajes de Asia Central, ni el gato del desierto chino.
El rastro más antiguo de la domesticación del gato se remonta a hace 9 500 años, cuando los gatos eran acompañantes de los pobladores primitivos de Chipre, pero las pruebas obtenidas demuestran que los primeros gatos domésticos son mucho más antiguos. De hecho podrían se cree que los gatos llegaron al humano hace aproximadamente 130 mil años.
Los expertos en el tema suponen que los gatos fueron los que se acercaron a los humanos y no al revés; pero no por el cariño, sino por que el lugar donde habitaba el hombre estaba plagado de roedores, el hombre noto que eran de mucha ayuda y empezaron a domesticarlo, creando un lazo con ellos.

Aunque los gatos tengan la mala fama de ser dañinos para la salud (lo cual no es cierto) existen personas como yo que los cuidamos (y no sólo a los gatos, sino a tódos los animales), ojalá más gente quisiera a los gatos para que así no hubiera tantos en la calle, y para poder preservar a su especie (aunque no estén en peligro de extinción, pero no se sabe en el futuro).
